a slice of my day...

Usual greeting, ‘Had a good day?’
Usual response, ‘Yes thanks.
Well that’s how it usually goes isn’t it.
So when The Man asked me that question today, when he came to meet me as he usually does after work, my answer wasn’t the usual. Why so I hear you ask, or would if I could actually hear you.
I’ll tell you
One of the things I do in my day to day work is to take cervical smears. Yes that’s right, leap up on the examination couch and let’s get on with it.
Give me a mo and you will see the connection.
Last week I did a smear on a young woman who had had the odd problem. And today that result came back.  And it was decidedly abnormal. Now as the smeartaker it is my responsibility to advise my clients of their result.  It’s usually a pleasure to contact the client and pass on results. Not so today. So how do you tell someone bad news, well not good news at least?
You do it armed with all the relevant information at your fingertips, which is how I handled it this morning.  A good description of what the result is, what specialist I am referring her to, and what she can expect at her consultation.  As important as all that is following her up after she has had her specialist appointment and treatment.
All in a day’s work for me.
