Brrr
it was a chilly 8 degrees when we left for work this morning, first day it has
been down into single figures a this time of the day. The wind is really chilly,
but nothing compared to the really nasty run of weather the lower south island
back home has had.
Here’s
a clip from stuff
Wild
winds and thunderstorms tearing across the South Island have left a potentially
multimillion-dollar trail of destruction in their wake.
And in
the North Island wind gusted to nearly 150kmh through Wellington overnight,
downing trees, disrupting travel, and causing powerlines to arc.
Police
warned motorists to expect delays in may parts of Canterbury this morning.
The
storm-force northwest winds - a record 251.9 kilometres per hour was recorded
on the Mt Hutt summit - sparked countless scrub fires, uprooted trees, snapped
power poles, tore roofs off buildings and overturned a truck, while a lightning
strike set a West Coast house ablaze.
Vast
areas of Canterbury were still without power early this morning, including in
Christchurch, Rangiora, Rolleston and Dunsandel, with outages affecting upwards
of 28,000 people.
The Fire
Service received about 900 emergency calls in the 11 hours from 6pm yesterday
to 5am today, and 1200 calls over a 24-hour period.
